Luo Brothers: Urban Space, Redefined

On the evening of June 3, The Village at Sanlitun embraced a new resident to join its bustlingly busy quarters. For one month, the sculpture Welcome, Welcome by MoCCA artists the Luo Brothers will be a semi-permanent fixture on one of Beijing’s most recognizable areas. After quickly establishing itself as the city center of chic lifestyle, The Village has been aiming to become the number-one site for a variety of cultural activities. Now, with work on display from the Luo Brothers—-China’s true pioneers of kitsch art—-it has become a seriously sought-after venue for public exhibitions of art.

Located right at the main entrance in front of the UNIQLO store, any visitor to the area has the chance to admire the 1.8 meter-tall stainless steel artwork, which showcases a typical Chinese New Year Baby astride a Coca-Cola bottle, diving into a stack of nameless books in homage to the material collision between two cultures. No less than two minutes after installation, Welcome, Welcome had already attracted a crowd of dozens—-at 11:00 PM in the evening! Welcome, indeed!
